On this day in 1653, Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland.
Cromwell was a Puritan, who opposed the king in the Long Parliament of 1640. During the Civil War he fought for Parliament. He thought that Parliamentary leaders did not do enough to try to defeat Charles.
Cromwell became the most powerful man in England, as the leader of the ‘New Model Army’.
